There is a large variety of grasses that do well in Florida

Bahiagrass - Argentine: This is one of the most popular grasses used on Florida lawns. This wide-bladed grass can tolerate droughts well. One issue with this grass is that it does require frequent mowing during the summer growth months. In order to keep its appearance lush-looking overseeding is recommended every 2-3 years.

Bahiagrass - Pensacola & Tifton 9: Of all the grasses, this type has the most tolerance for droughts. It has a narrower leaf than Argentine Bahia, but it is not considered to make a nice residential type lawn. It is used in areas of lower maintenance type lawns. Like Argentine its seed head production is objectionable from a maintenance standpoint.

Buffalo grass: This grass can tolerate hot weather and drought. But it does not do well in shade or in high traffic areas. It is blue green in color. Also, too much water can weaken and make the grass vulnerable to disease

St. Augustine: This is another commonly used grass in Florida. St. Augustine grass is planted with plugs, sod or sprigs. Although it is somewhat drought tolerant, it does require irrigation to help it maintain its appearance. It is also popular because it gives the lawn dense coverage. However, St. Augustine grass does need to be mowed often.

Centipede grass: Centipede grass is an attractive option for homeowners due to its low maintenance. It also requires little fertilization. This grass does very well in full sunlight but can also do well in the shade. One drawback to centipede grass is that it has low wear resistance.

Carpetgrass: Carpetgrass  is good for controlling erosion. It is low maintenance and will grow without being fertilized. It also grows well in places where the soil is moist. It does not like the shade. In addition, carpetgrass can tolerate a high volume of traffic.

Zoysiagrass: Zoysia grass is adaptable to many different types of soil. This grass grows relatively slow so mowing doesn’t have to be done as often. It does require irrigation and fertilization. Another advantage to using zoysia grass is that it gets dense which keeps weeds to a minimum.
